WELCOME TO PENGUIN COVE RUAKĀKĀ BAY
Welcome to our fully self-contained waterfront Bach, tucked away in its own private bay on a flat section, with unobstructed views. A peaceful stream runs behind the property, adding to the relaxed coastal atmosphere. We're proud to host two long-term "life stayers" who return every year – now visiting for their fourth season – which speaks to just how special this place is.
Enjoy fishing straight off the jetty, or make use of the 3-tonne mooring for your boat. Inside, you'll find all the modern comforts, including WiFi, five TVs, 2 heat pumps and everything you need for an easy, comfortable stay. Outside, unwind on the lawn with the provided table and chairs – perfect for picnics – or fire up the BBQ for those long summer evenings.
Private, peaceful, and perfectly positioned, with room to sleep up to 11 people, it's perfect for bringing the whole family or even two families to enjoy together, guests seeking a private waterfront retreat. Let the views, the water, and the simplicity of the bay work their magic.
All linen is supplied for your stay, with fresh sheets provided so beds can be remade before departure. We do have a few simple housekeeping guidelines to help keep the bach enjoyable for everyone: please leave the space in the same condition you found it, and ensure all rubbish is taken with you when you leave. About Us
Our family has cherished this bach for over 60 years. Located in the Queen Charlotte Sound at Ruakaka Bay, opposite the Tory Channel and 20 minutes by boat from Waikawa Marina, it has been owned by one family and loved by generations. For decades, we've spent our summers here making memories, enjoying the waterfront lifestyle, and appreciating the unique charm that only a place like this can offer. Now, for the first time, we're opening our doors so others can experience the magic too.
Recently fully renovated, the bach now blends its classic coastal character with all the modern comforts you'd expect, creating the perfect balance of nostalgia and convenience. From peaceful mornings by the stream to evenings spent fishing straight off your own private jetty or relaxing with a BBQ on the lawn, this is a place where life slows down and enjoyment takes over.
We invite you to discover why our family has treasured this spot for more than half a century. Book your stay today and experience the true bach lifestyle for yourself.
Ruakākā Bay
Ruakākā Bay sits within the sheltered waterways of Queen Charlotte Sound, offering calm seas, native bush, and a sense of peaceful seclusion. The bay is accessible only by boat, giving it a quiet, untouched atmosphere that appeals to visitors looking to unwind. Clear water, forested hillsides, and abundant birdlife create an environment ideal for kayaking, fishing, swimming, or simply relaxing by the shore. Its position opposite the Tory Channel means you often see passing boats and marine life without losing the tranquillity that defines the area.
Queen Charlotte Sound itself is one of the Marlborough Sounds' most celebrated destinations, known for its deep bays, winding inlets, and spectacular coastal scenery. The region offers excellent walking and cycling opportunities, including sections of the renowned Queen Charlotte Track. The water is typically calm and well-suited to boating, with countless coves to explore and picnic in. Visitors who base themselves in Ruakākā Bay gain a peaceful retreat while remaining close to the wider adventures and natural beauty that make Queen Charlotte Sound such a memorable part of New Zealand.
